Life as a BNZ Graduate: Margaret’s story

Meet Margaret, who joined the BNZ Business Banking Graduate programme in February 2017. In part two of our ‘Life as a BNZ Graduate’ series, Margaret reflects on what she’s learnt over the last few months and her favourite parts of the grad programme.

“My name is Margaret and I’m currently a Corporate and Commercial Banking Graduate at BNZ. I started this programme in early February 2017, having graduated a couple of years ago with a BA/BCom conjoint majoring in Finance, Economics and Japanese. BNZ first New Zealand bank to join SwapClear

BNZ announced on 19 June that it has become a Direct Clearing Member of LCH’s SwapClear interest rate swap clearing service – and has successfully cleared its first trade as a direct member.

BNZ Head of Markets, Graeme Liddell said: “Being the first New Zealand member of SwapClear links well with our strategy as a leading NZD swap market maker to provide increased liquidity and improved execution for our fixed income clients.

“Our membership also emphasises BNZ’s commitment to local and international regulatory objectives to centrally clear OTC derivatives,” he says.

Marcus Robinson, Asia Pacific Head of Rates and FX Derivatives, LCH, said: “We are delighted to welcome BNZ as the first New Zealand member of SwapClear. By clearing with LCH, BNZ can access SwapClear’s global liquidity pool across our product range which covers 18 cleared currencies, as well as our strong risk management capability in rates clearing.

“We are seeing tremendous uptake for our clearing services in New Zealand and across Asia-Pacific. We are continuing to deliver services to international users and local market participants across the world so they can benefit from the comprehensive risk and netting efficiencies associated with clearing.”

BNZ Closed for Good looks for community groups to help across the country

  • Community groups are invited to register their projects from today
  • In 2015, 3206 BNZ staff worked on over 500 community projects across the country
  • New Zealand’s single largest day of corporate volunteering

BNZ is once again closing its doors for one day and sending its staff out into the community to work with community groups – and project submissions are open from today.

Closed for Good will see the bank shut each of its stores on Wednesday 31 August and up to 5500 BNZ staff will get stuck in, helping community organisations around New Zealand.

BNZ Chief Executive Anthony Healy says Closed for Good is a highlight on the calendar for BNZ people who enjoy being able to work alongside community groups to support the work they do.

“Now in its seventh year, Closed for Good is New Zealand’s largest volunteer day with BNZ people helping with everything from fence painting to cleaning up public spaces to running scam savvy workshops – we want to hear from any community group who needs a job done.”

“Last year we helped on over 500 different projects nationwide with many BNZ people providing their specialised skills to help with things like helping with budgeting, business planning and advice or running a financial literacy workshop – so think broadly and BNZ can be at the ready with helping hands.”

“Volunteering is one of the unsung heroes of our economy and being part of closed for Good doesn’t have to end with one day. All our staff have a second day of volunteering and often Closed for Good is a starting point for long term connections in our local communities.”

Submissions for this year’s projects close on 15 July 2016.

Calling all community groups in New Zealand! BNZ Closed for Good project submissions open today

Media Release
13 June 2017

  •  Community groups are invited to register their projects starting today
  • 3266 BNZ staff worked on more than 500 community projects nationwide in 2016
  • New Zealand’s single largest day of corporate volunteering

BNZ is today asking community groups to put their hands up for support as Closed for Good project submissions open.

Closed for Good will see the bank close each of its stores for one day on Wednesday 23 August and thousands of BNZ staffers will head out to help community organisations all across the country.

BNZ Chief Executive Anthony Healy says staff look forward to Closed for Good and the opportunity to get out in the community and help those who need it.

“This is the eighth time we have run Closed for Good and it’s always hugely exciting to see all the different project submissions come in. The day reflects the great Kiwi reputation for mucking in and helping out, so I would encourage everyone out there to have a think about how we can help you with a project – we are ready and willing!

“Last year we worked on more than 500 different projects around New Zealand – everything from painting fences to teaching young children. We used our people’s specialised skills when it came to areas like budgeting, business planning and financial literacy, as well as the good, old fashioned Kiwi skills of DIY and ingenuity.

“We still have people in the business who are just as excited to get involved as when it first started. It’s a very rewarding day and as all staff have a second day to use for volunteering purposes we often find Closed for Good becomes the catalyst for conversations around how we can support a community on a longer term basis.”

Submissions for this year’s projects close on 7 July 2017.
